In case you haven't heard of me, and find some of the above interesting, I suggest you check out my earth in LittleBigPlanet 3!
When the lights go out... It's time for any aspiring young wizard to explore the halls of their academy!
How long have you been playing LittleBigPlanet, and what inspired you to dive into Create Mode?
I own all the LittleBigPlanet games and I believe that it was back in 2010, where some of my friends from school were playing the original LittleBigPlanet and introduced me to it when we were hanging out.
Back then it was just jumping around and having fun, but when I eventually got the game myself, I was more into the creating aspect of the game.
So, when LittleBigPlanet 2 came out, and eventually LittleBigPlanet 3, I was blessed to have even greater opportunities to create more than just "simple" platformers.
What are your favourite things about creating in LittleBigPlanet?
I think it's the fact that I can make levels that I, first and foremost, will enjoy.
Back in the first LittleBigPlanet especially, my main reason for even sharing the content that I created was in case anyone was searching for the same gaming experience as me. I was very motivated by the thought of making games the way that I wanted them to be.
I was basically making levels based on big franchises, such as Harry Potter, because I wanted to expand my enjoyment of these franchises to other LittleBigPlanet players.
Although I am not making direct "copies" of game franchises anymore though, so the levels I make now are just things that I am interested in outside of LittleBigPlanet.
Can you tell us a little about the first level that you created?
It's been so long... But I believe it was Harry Potter. However, it was cleverly named "Sacky Potter".
Although my first level could have been a Formula 1 level instead… I don't really remember!
But I do remember the times of creating in LittleBigPlanet. If only newcomers to LittleBigPlanet knew what it was like back then! Making "Sackbots" out of cardboard material and putting on creepy eyes and a mouth so they could talk.
Not to mention the fact that one of the most advanced pieces of logic back then was the Emitter! Things have really changed.
Do you have any favourite levels amongst your creations? What is it about them that you like?
Without a doubt, it’s LittleBigDuel 2: Academy.
I feel like everything went right with this project. At the time, it was almost like I was in a zone where I couldn't pick the wrong choice, whether it was about design or logic – and I say this because every time I play the level now, I somehow surprise myself on how I managed to complete such a huge project with that amount of detail in a month.
But I guess most people feel like that about their own projects, right? Just me...?
Long story short though, I had the whole project stuck in my head constantly for weeks, and everything was written down and drawn before even starting the project on LittleBigPlanet. This was mainly to avoid forgetting certain functions of the game that could force me into redoing a lot of already hard work.
However, I must also say that, as an honourable mention, my Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal remake is another proud level of mine, as it remains the only level in LittleBigPlanet this accurate to the real game and is therefore somewhat of a proud achievement for me.
Play your cards right and you will be able to defeat any oppeneng in LittleBigDuel 2: Academy!
Do you have a favourite type of level that you like to play in LittleBigPlanet?
I must admit that I don't spend much time playing levels, unfortunately. As mentioned, I use LittleBigPlanet to create my dream games mostly for myself to enjoy. However, from the ones I have played, I quite enjoy the levels that make use of intelligent Sackbots in them, mostly because I find them impressive.
I know how hard it is to create "fake intelligence" from having it to use it in my own levels.
So, I always admire the creators who manage to make the Sackbots (or other characters) seem like real characters in their levels.
Do you draw many inspirations from outside LittleBigPlanet when creating your own levels?
The people who have played my levels probably know that my inspirations comes from already existing franchises. I usually just put my own twist on it by adding the things that I like and removing the things that I don't.
My fundamental inspiration though, probably comes from my younger days. When gaming first became a part of my life, I kind of absorbed the different games' atmosphere, detail and logic.
So, that was a great inspiration for me on the games that I'm making today, but I must admit that most of the things you see in my levels are just made from my pure imagination and instinct.
I think I have a pretty good sense about what a menu should look like, as well as what music and sounds should be used, to fit the topic of the game.
MilleogFreja's meticulous menus always make it feel like you have just loaded an entirely different game!
Are there any creators or levels that have inspired you to create that you would like to talk about?
There are many creators I have learned from, but at the time I was playing their levels, I wasn't looking at their names – I just cared about the individual level.
I guess this means that, for me, it's more the levels that inspire me to create. This could be a level that would have a wonderful atmosphere that made me feel like I was really in a jungle, or a level that could blow me away with scenery or logic. Most importantly, I just try to remember the feelings these levels give me, so I can make sure that I'll be able to provide the same feelings in my own creations.
Are you a creative person outside of LittleBigPlanet? What do you create outside of the game?
Yes, I have been creative my whole life. The amount of paper I used to draw and create things, especially when I was young, was unbelievable.
It was often small things I created, such as a bag of money for a bank robber that I would use for my Spider-Man toys, but I also made bigger projects such as a mini-copy of a building.
But I could really go on and on about the creative things I've made throughout my life, so I won't!
LittleBigDuel 2: Academy's World Map is a sight to behold in itself!
Do you have any upcoming levels or projects that wish to share with us now?
I wish I had... Having just finished "The Wizarding Trilogy" with a mini-game level, I can't see myself making some other projects I have ideas for, as the ideas are too big (RPG-style) and, right now, I'm just too lazy!
So, if I come up with a new project soon, it will probably be another mini-game.
