It's time for another sit down chat with a community member in Community Corner and with us this time is Rangers-1 to talk to us about his own movie creations and his favourite movies in LittleBigPlanet.
Movie Directors often have a chair with their name on...
But since no-one reading this will be able to see your chair... And they're missing out because it's a really lovely-looking chair! Please tell us the name on it and a little about yourself...
Oh! And I'm Scottish!
So Scott from Scotland, how long have you been a part of the LittleBigPlanet community?
I've been with the LittleBigPlanet series since the beta of the very first game, so it's been quite a long time that I've had Sackboy in my life.
LittleBigPlanet has brought a lot of memories over the years and the best part is that I met my beautiful wife BunnyBia on LittleBigPlanet 2, how awesome is that?
Rangers-1, BunnyBia and an entire LittleBigPlanet for them to explore!
Woah! Hold the metaphorical phone!
You MET YOUR WIFE playing LittleBigPlanet?
So when we first asked prior to this interview, if you had any particularly interesting stories that you wanted to tell and you said no…
It never crossed your mind to mention that?!
Anyway! Now that we know that… Would you mind sharing how you and BunnyBia met?
I first met Bia on a friend's Moon, I would sometimes join others to see what they were creating but most of my free time I would stick to being by myself, deep in Create Mode.
It's funny though because I had a strange urge to join my friend a_robot_dlO__Olb one night after a particularly long create session.
Shortly after I joined, BunnyBia arrived as the 4th player. After a short period of time there was a connection issue and we were all thrown back to our own pods. Suddenly though, two of the players including BunnyBia entered my Pod.
We got chatting during that time and ended up becoming great friends, however it wasn't until a year later that we started to grow closer and eventually met up in Miami.
We got married on the 24th of January this year. It was an incredible day, and even Sackboy was involved as we included a table of memories where Sackboy sat proudly.
Sackboy being the guest of honour at Ranger-1 and BunnyBia's wedding.
Now a few years on we live together in Bia's sunny nation of Brazil.
What a lovely and very unexpected tale! We genuinely had no idea that you met your wife in LittleBigPlanet… Thanks for sharing with us!
It sounds like things are already pretty amazing for you in LittleBigPlanet but let’s discuss you as a creator… What are your favourite things about creating in LittleBigPlanet?
I love that you can literally make any style or theme of level that you want.
LittleBigPlanet is a place for everyone to express themselves which stretches far beyond just creating levels.
Costume Design, Music, Voice Acting, Artwork etc… It's a fantastic place to see talents and hobbies flourish. It's an incredible feeling to see your ideas come to life when otherwise it may not have been possible. The LittleBigPlanet games are incredibly unique.
What inspired you to dive into Create Mode?
For as long as I can remember, I've always been a creative person. I remember that even from a young age, I always used to love to write but I always assumed this was just a normal thing that everyone enjoyed.
It's only when I began to play LittleBigPlanet that I truly realised how creative I liked to be. The first game was just about having fun and trying to explore my imagination in a digital space. I used to have a lot of stupid-fun creating with my cousin Andrew, it was a great way to just be crazy and laugh at stupid things.
It's insane to think on how far I've came from that point.
I mean, I'm being interviewed by LittleBigPlanet!
The second game is when I finally understood that creating films is where I was supposed to be. The constant wave of fantastic community levels proves just how powerful the Create Mode can be.
Can you tell us a little about the first-ever level that you created?
Next question please, haha…
As I mentioned before, my time in the first LittleBigPlanet game was nothing serious, I think the very first level was just a random collection of things that I had learned to create and put them all together.
It's not something that I would have published but back then I didn't care, haha.
I don't recommend anyone to play my levels from the original game since they were made purely for my friends and cousin to laugh at stupidly.
Besides, nobody played my levels back then so I didn't care about what I put out, haha.
Snow White in a library... It must be a 'silent' movie... ;)
Do you have any favourite movies or levels amongst your creations?
Pretty much all of my films. That sounds like I love everything I make but when you look at it, I haven't made the widest of libraries. I started making films on LittleBigPlanet 2 but it wasn't until nearer the tail end of that game's lifecycle, just before LittleBigPlanet 3 hit the scene.
Before that I was just making random levels, like an enhanced version of the trash I used to make on the first game.
Once I started making films, I began with a six episode series titled 'Ghosts'. At the time I saw so many bad films on LittleBigPlanet 2, you know the ones I'm talking about! I felt as though films were getting a bad reputation and I wanted to bring forward a more cinematic experience with camera angles which you would expect from a traditional TV series.
Now, this series wasn't perfect, it had its flaws considering that it was my first attempt at creating films, but it was ambitious for me at the time. Batman: The Justice League Prologue is arguably the best thing that I have made and it was my first Team Pick, so it will always be close to my heart.
The Blank Page was a nice introduction to LittleBigPlanet 3 but that barely scratches the surface for what I really plan to do with this game.
If your highschool yearbook photo looked this bad... You would want a Blank Page too!
You say that you saw so many bad films on LittleBigPlanet 2?
Would you care to elaborate a little further on what you mean?
Certainly! There are so many great examples of excellent or simply decent platformers and various other levels.
There are some great movies on the game but they are much rarer when you compare with other playable levels. The average movie level felt like it was made within an hour or two and consisted of something really shallow.
Movies became a very lazy way to create an entertaining level and I felt like they were gaining a bad reputation.
I used to get frustrated that movie levels weren't being created seriously on a more regular basis and it was another motivator for trying my hand at creating them myself.
I mean no disrespect, creators are entitled to create whatever they want, I just felt movies had more potential than someone blowing a banana up and laughing about it.
It’s certainly true that there are a wide variety of tastes in LittleBigPlanet and it’s good to hear that you felt motivated to create movies that offered something very different from the other movies that you personally disliked.
"How will Batman get out of this one? Find out tomorrow... Same Bat-Time, Same Bat-Channel!"
Anyway, we’ve just covered the bad but do you have a favourite type of level that you like to play in LittleBigPlanet?
I really enjoy levels which transform LittleBigPlanet into an entirely different game.
It can involve Sackbots or any other style that uses custom logic to create something with its own identity.
RPGs, Top-Down, Puzzles, First-Person, etc… I enjoy playing everything that the community offers but those are my favourite types by far.
I've played so many traditional platforming levels that it takes something truly unique to surprise me nowadays with that genre.
Do you draw many inspirations from outside LittleBigPlanet when creating your movies?
Films, TV Shows and other Video Games definitely. I don't try to mimic anything in particular but when I watch or play something outstanding, it helps to inspire me to create on a much higher level with every project that I'm involved with.
My films for example are still growing, I have far from peaked, so I'm always striving to create the next big thing. Hopefully one day I can create something which turns heads, my ambitions know no bounds!
Are there any creators or levels that have inspired you create that you would like to talk about?
Having played a lot of levels there will be lots who have at least subconsciously inspired me to at least create to a high standard. Talking specifics though, I have some memories which have inspired me greatly at certain points of my time on LittleBigPlanet.
One of the first films which made me think, “Wow this is awesome that you can create this on LittleBigPlanet!”, was a horror movie level called 'Afraid' by SpiderMaguire. I never knew him personally but that level at the time was very impressive.
Moving on a bit you have Samurai-09 who really changed what was possible in LittleBigPlanet2 with big blockbusters such as 'Ninja Cat'.
On a more personal level, I used to create with jowife1993 and at the time she was creating what was shaping into a wonderfully detailed film. This was a major boot in the butt for me to get started with 'Ghosts'.
My wife BunnyBia has to be my biggest inspiration though.
Whilst not a creator, she has a fantastic eye for detail and helped tremendously in co-producing Batman: The Justice League Prologue and The Blank Page which earned those Team Picks.
Are you a creative person outside of LittleBigPlanet? What do you create outside of the game?
With the combination of LittleBigPlanet and another creative game that I used to play on the PC called 'The Movies', I feel that I have unlocked my creative potential.
LittleBigPlanet remains a big creative part of my life but outside of the game, I started a YouTube channel called LittleBigAnimation.
This channel allowed me to push my creativity in new ways as well as showcasing my latest LittleBigPlanet content. I've also dabbled in freelance digital art and marketing using Photoshop. My life is basically Create Mode, I just can't hover about like Sackboy… At least not yet.
Do you have any upcoming levels or projects that wish to share with us now?
That would need a whole new interview, haha.
In short, I have the full Batman: Justice League series which consists of 5 major episodes coming very soon. It's taken a while since I released the prologue but I don't regret taking this long to finish it.
Everything has formed very conveniently, I have refined the series to the best it could possibly be and I was very fortunate to come across more quality voice actors to help with the project.
I would like to give a mention to everyone that has helped me on this mammoth project, amongst other past and present animations.
Everyone has been a massive help and their support will never be taken for granted.
There are many more projects in the works, the first episode of Fables will probably be released by the time this interview is published, it's a remake of a comic book franchise.
This is a side project but I'm just as excited to see the reception it receives. I have some Deadpool short animations arriving too, maybe a full movie will surface one day.
"What? Are you expecting me to say one of my trademark one-liners?
You know children play this game... Right?"
If anyone would like to keep up-to-date with my projects then my YouTube channel LittleBigAnimation would be the best place until the projects are ready in-game.
Thank you for having me, it's been great to talk about my time with LittleBigPlanet and here's to the future.
