‘Turbo! Pack’ Development Diary 9: ‘Tanks a Lot’

We found that you can have fun emitting bridge sections while swinging the bridge emitting arm around. We also found that the bridge sections can get in the way, and that you can just emit lots on one gap to easily bridge it, so we limited number of bridge sections that can be emitted to one at a time. The tank was good fun, but we decided that what we also wanted something that actually fires missiles. Technically (here comes the science bit), the tank fires projectiles, which aren’t self propelled, and we want missiles, that zoom towards their target rather than arcing towards them like a grenade (okay, not very scientific). Making these guys actually go in the right...

Jump! Die? That is one great list to be proud of! Which of these is your own favorite? And why? Hmm this is a very tough question. I have a few favourites for different reasons. Flaming...

PSP Sacky Winners 2010

Best Use of Story The Empire’s Striped Snack by tsr13 This level is filled with funny, well-written dialogue that puts the gameplay into context and complements the visuals perfectly. You can’t ask for more. Stand-out moments: all the puns! Best Vehicle The Garage by MattAstr An obvious inspiration for the upcoming Turbo! Premium Level Kit, this level lets you choose different vehicle components, and gives the player some really interesting choices. Pure class. Most Promising Creator Bender_82 for Golden Race We just keep coming back to this level. It's short, but it keeps us hooked all the way through with solid gameplay. More please! ‘Turbo! Pack’ Development Diary 8: ‘Sub Standard’

To create a sense of depth, fade stickers are particularly useful. We put them on top of the new water plant stickers that we’ve made, to create the illusion that they are far away in the murky depths. The submarine itself works very well considering the difficulties that the design team faced, and again we’re providing you with all its separate components so that you can build your own version…or weird mutated version. We wanted it to look like a well-loved bath toy that had been used so much that the plastic had a rough, limescaley texture, so it’s quite unique. Out of all the vehicles that we’ve made so far it really stands out because it looks so fun...

‘Turbo! Pack’ Development Diary 7: ‘Sub Standard’

Another problem I had was that if Sackboy dies while in the submarine near the start, the submarine’s new version can’t be emitted because the old one’s in the way. Solution: when Sackboy’s absent (dying removes him from the level momentarily), metal blocks are emitted inside the submarine to make it nice and heavy. Useful Submarine facts: * The control platform only rises when there is a blue magnetic key near the conning tower. * The submarine hatch opens when Sackboy is near it. If Sackboy is on the control platform when it’s in its lowered position, he’s far enough away for it to close. Try making your own submarine, with some torpedo launchers and more powerful rockets. Next, it...

LittleBigStore: More Animals!

In addition to the existing herd of creatures Sackboy can already transform into, pretty soon he'll be able to take the form of a Hippo, Turtle, Fly or Peacock. It's looking decidedly like Hugo will soon have some company in the LittleBigPlanet jungle, and the way we're heading we'll be able to open our own wildlife reserve before too long! Take a walk on the wild side as the More Animals pack hits the LittleBigStore next week . Aww aren't they cute? If you can class a fly as cute anyway.

LBP PSP Sackademy award Nominations 2010

Best Use of Story Telling a story with LittleBigPlanet is often the last thing on a creator’s mind. However, some of you have taken the time to craft funny, interesting dialogue. And the Nominees are: A Dingo Down Under by amazingflyingpoo The Empire’s Striped Snack by tsr13 Now and Then by amazingflyingpoo Best Vehicle The rocket camel is a popular choice, and we’ve all made simple cars with a simple ‘grab switch and wheels’ set-up, but some creators have raised the bar. And the Nominees are: The Garage by MattAstr AT AT WALKER by SalieriAAX Steamroller: Calamity Construction by jackofcourse . Just because it pulls a wheelie, every time. ‘Turbo! Pack’ Development Diary 6: ‘Hopping Mad’

Like all our other vehicles, the pogostick itself is a 3D object. There was quite a lot of head-scratching over the design to start with because obviously if we made one that was realistically proportioned then it would be about half the height of your Sackperson. In other words, ridiculously tiny. We think our solution works pretty well however! For something so simple, this level is a real success. It just goes to show that you don’t have to make something massively complicated for it to be fun! Remember though, that when decorating, less is sometimes more. Don’t go too crazy with your stickers and materials just because you can. Now, what are you waiting for? Hop to it!

LittleBigPlanet Central’s Creator Spotlight: Morgana25

*If you could list your favorite thing about LittleBigPlanet, what would it be?* My favorite thing about the game is that you have this wonderful set of tools to express yourself creatively. You can tell stories, make beautiful images or scenes, create characters and any number of other things that are uniquely you. I really love that it brings artsy, creative types and logical, engineering types together too. The mix of art and science doesn't happen enough in real life. Imagine what people could do if it did! *Aside from drawing inspiration from other creators and levels, is there anything in the world outside of LittleBigPlanet that inspires you?* Well my career as a graphic designer has influenced my work...

PSP Update 2.05 - Cherry Pie

*New Objects* * The Microbomb: a smaller shockbomb, which can kill creature brains and Sackboy, but won’t break anything else. Small, red and deadly, the microbomb is our new favourite toy, ideal as a grenade or as an explosive tip for a missile. Ka-boom. * The Magic Eye: give your creatures (and anything else) some peepers. Just put eyes on something, anything, and it’ll look at Sackboy when he’s near it, as well as making that object suddenly look sentient, and well, a bit weird. *Functions* * Flip for Objects is now supported, so you can make them face in either direction. Very handy for vehicles. * Front View: removes all perspective, allowing that extra level of precision for all...

‘Turbo! Pack’ Development Diary 4: ‘Construction Derby’ – Lisa Harmon, Senior Artist

This level also introduces not one but two new story characters that are also 3D and can be collected in prize bubbles as their separate components. If you really wanted to there’s a couple of heads you could attach to the crane as wrecking balls… not that we would condone such things! The new theme really started to come into its own with this level, with the use of lots of bright colours and in particular a lovely pale coloured wood. We’ve made an entire set of new materials that hopefully you’ll find as useful as we have done! Amongst other things we’ve also made some materials that look like plastic to really get that “toybox” feel. We really loved...

‘Turbo! Pack’ Development Diary 3: ‘Construction Derby’ – Sam Dickinson, Designer

The first was the Forklift Truck. It worked exactly how we wanted, but unfortunately it was prone to falling over when lifting a heavy load. So what we did was attach some peach floaty material to each load, to make it a lot lighter and stop the forklift falling over. Just like in real life, the pallet was essential to allow loads to be lifted easily. Next, we wanted to pick up some really big things. So we made the Crane, with a hook. Then we realised that it would be even cooler to be able to pick things up if they didn’t need something for the hook to attach to. So we made a claw attachment and now we...
