The LittleBigMap

The LittleBigMap collates together LBP discussions and content from across the web, and plots some of the latest and best videos, pics and tweets on a handy and familiar map interface. So, at a glance you can see that thousands of people are contributing to the LBP community from all over the world – and then you can zoom in, navigate around and take a look at some of the content they’re sharing. There are some nice photos in Hawaii, for starters. :) The extra cool thing is – the LittleBigMap notices when lbp.me URLs are included in video descriptions, screenshots and tweets, and automatically pulls in stats and information about that level. It’s another way of discovering the most...

Today LittleBigPlanet PSP celebrates its first birthday!

So, where are we a year after the game's release? Well, the Community Moon now contains over 130,000 community levels, with well over 1,500 published every week, some of which are of truly exceptional quality. The LBP PSP community is thriving, with strong communication and support between creators; we're on our seventh community competition, with creators running each one very professionally, as well as coming up with cool ideas for themes; and collaborations like the mighty 'Kindred' and the '12 Days of Christmas' have taken us by surprise with their remarkable dedication and organisation. A community this passionate is something very special indeed, and the SCE Cambridge Studio greatly appreciates all the amazing talent and energy that the community creators...

From YellowHead to Sackboy

“He had a lot of personality, even then” reflects Kareem, as he, Francis and I glance at some concept artwork and look back to the early days of the now iconic character’s origins. “I think it was the cheekiness. Dave always does that, pays attention to personality and very subtle things. When YellowHead was pulling the big old rock, the character looked like he was straining, even though there was no supporting animation… his little debug arms stretching as he pulled.” YellowHead was very much placeholder programmer art created by Dave for the first playable CraftWorld code which was taken up to Sony on that fateful day of the pitch. But although he was merely a stand in, he ended...

New servers bring new features!

Cool Levels Cool Levels and Highest Rated now work slightly differently, and also need a little bit of time to settle down, so may look weird for a few days. The new servers allow us to tweak the way that Cool Levels works much faster than before, so we may play around with it a bit to get it working just the way we want it! MmPicks If you look under the new MmPicks Search category, you’ll find a selection of our favourite levels. The current selection has been taken from the Media Molecule blog, and we will be adding to it over time. Enjoy! Play Queues Queues are now active in LittleBigPlanet! When you find a cool level you...

LittleBigPlanet 2 Adventure Trailer

But LittleBigPlanet 2 isn’t just about creating – first and foremost, it’s about fun in all its forms. So aside from all of those creative tools, there’s a whole meaty Story Mode to explore. It’s an epic adventure through time and space, featuring awesome gameplay types, cool new power-ups, and a quirky cast of new characters. And on top of all of that, up to four players can get involved for maximum multiplayer merriment (thanks, Mr Thesaurus). So, take a peek at all of this by checking out the new ‘Adventure’ Trailer… There’s going to be lots more LittleBigPlanet news to come over the next few weeks (especially once GamesCom gets started). ‘Turbo! Pack’ Development Diary 8: ‘Sub Standard’

To create a sense of depth, fade stickers are particularly useful. We put them on top of the new water plant stickers that we’ve made, to create the illusion that they are far away in the murky depths. The submarine itself works very well considering the difficulties that the design team faced, and again we’re providing you with all its separate components so that you can build your own version…or weird mutated version. We wanted it to look like a well-loved bath toy that had been used so much that the plastic had a rough, limescaley texture, so it’s quite unique. Out of all the vehicles that we’ve made so far it really stands out because it looks so fun...

LBP PSP Sackademy award Nominations 2010

Best Use of Story Telling a story with LittleBigPlanet is often the last thing on a creator’s mind. However, some of you have taken the time to craft funny, interesting dialogue. And the Nominees are: A Dingo Down Under by amazingflyingpoo The Empire’s Striped Snack by tsr13 Now and Then by amazingflyingpoo Best Vehicle The rocket camel is a popular choice, and we’ve all made simple cars with a simple ‘grab switch and wheels’ set-up, but some creators have raised the bar. And the Nominees are: The Garage by MattAstr AT AT WALKER by SalieriAAX Steamroller: Calamity Construction by jackofcourse . Just because it pulls a wheelie, every time. ‘Turbo! Pack’ Development Diary 6: ‘Hopping Mad’

Like all our other vehicles, the pogostick itself is a 3D object. There was quite a lot of head-scratching over the design to start with because obviously if we made one that was realistically proportioned then it would be about half the height of your Sackperson. In other words, ridiculously tiny. We think our solution works pretty well however! For something so simple, this level is a real success. It just goes to show that you don’t have to make something massively complicated for it to be fun! Remember though, that when decorating, less is sometimes more. Don’t go too crazy with your stickers and materials just because you can. Now, what are you waiting for? Hop to it!
