LittleBigPlanet at Gamescom 2011

First up is this new and distinctly fabulous trailer, and a set of screenshots , for LittleBigPlanet on Vita. This forthcoming new portable edition of LBP allows you to Play, Create, Share Everywhere, and this trailer shows that working to full effect, along with a glimpse at how natural and easy the new touch Create mode is going to be! Let's move right along to the LittleBigPlanet Move Pack, along with a promise of no further Move puns in this paragraph. Featuring a brand new story mode; Rise of the Cakeling, a new power-up for Sackboy called the Brain Crane, and a suite of creative tools to help you build your own Move games, paint your own stickers and record...

LBPC Creator Spotlights: Teebonsey, Jump_Button and Poms

Teebonesey If you could list your favorite thing about LittleBigPlanet, what would it be? My favorite thing is twofold - First is the ability to prize your brain open like a dusty old crate and let loose the wild beasties within in an unheard-of capacity. The second is the ability to actually experience in a strange way the untamed insides of so many other peoples' brains. Part of that experience is how the "LBP level" is its own medium and we've been able to explore it, to innovate with it, to invent with it. It's a microcosm of every major new art form. We are the first filmmakers, the first recorders of music, the first photographers, all in the shoebox...

LittleBigStore: Solstice Costume

The Solstice is when the tilt of the earth's axis will mean the northern hemisphere is the closest to the sun that it will get all year, making it hotter, making it summer time! In ancient times, hundreds of years before the dawn of history, a strange race of people called the Druids celebrated the when the sun was at its strongest - at midday on the Solstice - by performing mystical rites and combing their beards. We too shall celebrate the Solstice, by once again releasing this free costume, and once again re-using an old joke about just how long their beards are... Download the costume for free on the store this week!

‘Turbo! Pack’ Development Diary 11: ‘Plane Stupid’

And another thing: the trouble with something as big as the jump jet being made to move at any speed greater than ‘quite slow’ is that you can’t see where you’re going. With the tank, for example, you can point the camera in front of it, and as long as Sackboy’s on-screen, everything’s fine. But the tank only needs to move forwards in its levels; the jet has to be able to go forwards, backwards, up, down, in fact it’s more than four directions because you can go diagonally as well. The point is, I cracked it. The jet has a variable counter thrust when the player lets go of a control, making it stop quickly, so that you don’t...

‘Turbo! Pack’ Development Diary 9: ‘Tanks a Lot’

We found that you can have fun emitting bridge sections while swinging the bridge emitting arm around. We also found that the bridge sections can get in the way, and that you can just emit lots on one gap to easily bridge it, so we limited number of bridge sections that can be emitted to one at a time. The tank was good fun, but we decided that what we also wanted something that actually fires missiles. Technically (here comes the science bit), the tank fires projectiles, which aren’t self propelled, and we want missiles, that zoom towards their target rather than arcing towards them like a grenade (okay, not very scientific). Making these guys actually go in the right...

LittleBigPlanet Central’s Creator Spotlight: Jackofcourse

What has now become the opening question for the Creator Spotlight crew, would you be so kind to please list the levels you’ve published to date and any statistics you’d like to share with us, e.g. plays, hearts, how many rocket animals per level, etc. Whatever you feel like sharing. * Perennial Danger * Perennial Expedition * Flaming Timberland * Flaming Timberland 2 * Calamity Construction * Industrial Assistance * Tribal Ruins * Pretty Simple * Egyptian Findings * Industrial Assistance 2 * Shoot! Jump! Die? That is one great list to be proud of! Which of these is your own favorite? And why? Hmm this is a very tough question. I have a few favourites for different reasons. Flaming...

‘Turbo! Pack’ Development Diary 7: ‘Sub Standard’

Another problem I had was that if Sackboy dies while in the submarine near the start, the submarine’s new version can’t be emitted because the old one’s in the way. Solution: when Sackboy’s absent (dying removes him from the level momentarily), metal blocks are emitted inside the submarine to make it nice and heavy. Useful Submarine facts: * The control platform only rises when there is a blue magnetic key near the conning tower. * The submarine hatch opens when Sackboy is near it. If Sackboy is on the control platform when it’s in its lowered position, he’s far enough away for it to close. Try making your own submarine, with some torpedo launchers and more powerful rockets. Next, it...

LittleBigStore: More Animals!

In addition to the existing herd of creatures Sackboy can already transform into, pretty soon he'll be able to take the form of a Hippo, Turtle, Fly or Peacock. It's looking decidedly like Hugo will soon have some company in the LittleBigPlanet jungle, and the way we're heading we'll be able to open our own wildlife reserve before too long! Take a walk on the wild side as the More Animals pack hits the LittleBigStore next week . Aww aren't they cute? If you can class a fly as cute anyway.

‘Turbo! Pack’ Development Diary 6: ‘Hopping Mad’

Like all our other vehicles, the pogostick itself is a 3D object. There was quite a lot of head-scratching over the design to start with because obviously if we made one that was realistically proportioned then it would be about half the height of your Sackperson. In other words, ridiculously tiny. We think our solution works pretty well however! For something so simple, this level is a real success. It just goes to show that you don’t have to make something massively complicated for it to be fun! Remember though, that when decorating, less is sometimes more. Don’t go too crazy with your stickers and materials just because you can. Now, what are you waiting for? Hop to it!

PSP Update 2.05 - Cherry Pie

*New Objects* * The Microbomb: a smaller shockbomb, which can kill creature brains and Sackboy, but won’t break anything else. Small, red and deadly, the microbomb is our new favourite toy, ideal as a grenade or as an explosive tip for a missile. Ka-boom. * The Magic Eye: give your creatures (and anything else) some peepers. Just put eyes on something, anything, and it’ll look at Sackboy when he’s near it, as well as making that object suddenly look sentient, and well, a bit weird. *Functions* * Flip for Objects is now supported, so you can make them face in either direction. Very handy for vehicles. * Front View: removes all perspective, allowing that extra level of precision for all...
